Maxine Turner

Maxine Turner (nee Murphy) March 17th, 1931 - July 29th,2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Maxine. She was 87 years young.

Maxine was born in Mississauga, Ontario. She was predeceased by her parents Jack and Doreen Murphy and her older brother Patrick, who immigrated to Canada from Donegal, Ireland. She tragically lost her husband Bob 4 years ago to pancreatic cancer.

Maxine went to a one room school which ended up being where she first taught a multi-age classroom. It was there she met Bob Turner (Bobby in those days) as he used to deliver firewood for the woodstove that heated it. The Turner family ran lumber yards and their business expanded so Bob was asked to head up a new yard in Owen Sound. Bob and Maxine married and she went with him and then found a teaching job in a bigger school. Her favourite subject to teach was art and eventually her career allowed her to specialize and follow that passion. They moved to Corran and Bob retired early due to an unfortunate knee injury. Maxine kept teaching well past retirement. They could barely get rid of her in her 70s. She just loved her work too much and the students adored her in return.

Maxine was an avid gardener and bird watcher. She volunteered at the hospital doing therapeutic painting sessions with long term patients. Some of you may remember her paint nights in the local areas, often to raise money for charities. Maxine and Bob loved the cinema seeing new and old films, and especially looked forward to the Academy Awards. She loved bowling, ice skating, high tea and wonderfully outrageous hats.

It was not in nature’s plan for Maxine and Bob to have children and they never chose to adopt. But she gave all her love to Bob, her students, her community and her friends. Maxine was a fierce and loyal friend. She loved to cook for people, spark weekend getaways and generate spontaneous fits of hysterical laughter. Her love and her laugh will be greatly missed.
